The beauty of learning by repetition from Marcus Sheridan

This week I asked Marcus Sheridan a question that I have been asked a few times, which goes something like this:

Why would I come and see Marcus Sheridan speak if I have already watched all of his videos, read all his blogs and listened to all his podcasts?

I have also been asked “why should I come and see Marcus speak again if I’ve already seen him speak before?

I think I know the answer to these questions, and you probably do too, but I thought it’d be best to hear it directly from Marcus himself, especially since he is our Closing Keynote Speaker at our conference this year (2015).

This is what Marcus has to say about it all…

1. You get the energy of the speaker

“It’s totally different live and you get the energy of the speaker”

You can watch a video online, but the energy you get from a video online isn’t even close to the real thing.

There’s a vibe when you are shoulder to shoulder in a room with people.

You simply can’t replace the energy of a room.

2. Learning through repetition

Have you ever read a book more than once, and you’ve felt that you got a lot more out of it the second time than you did the first time? Or that you got something completely different out of it than you did the first time?

I’m sure you’ve experience this many many times.

Or have you read something again and you say to yourself “why am I not doing that??…I know I’m supposed be doing that!

I read stuff again online all the time and a lot of it I’ve read before and it takes maybe 3,4, or 5 times for me to say “Dude! Why are you not doing this, I mean get with the programme. Just go with it“.

It sometimes just takes a certain number of hearing the thing or watching the thing for it to sink in for you to say “OK, I’ve actually got to do that. I’ve got to get that thing done.”

I’ve listened to my friend Ian Altman multiple times. I’ve heard him and watched him give the exact same talk at least 20 times. Every single time I say to myself “why am I not doing that?

3. Distill your thoughts

I have shared my talks well over 100 times. I talk about this stuff again and again so that eventually I’ll start doing these things myself.

When we talk about something, when we teach about it, when we bear our thoughts in our mind on it, all of a sudden it becomes more about who we are.

It gives each one of us the opportunity to further distill our thoughts in front of an audience where we are forced to do it and move forward.

Your turn

  1. Have you benefited from seeing a speaker more than once?
  2. What other benefits to you get from learning by repetition?
